If I seem a little extra bitchy in the next 2 weeks, this is why

About a month and a half ago, I decided that if I could get down to 125 pounds by race day, I’d have a better chance of finishing/not dying somewhere between mile 15 and the end. So I started to keep a little food journal (which really does work surprisingly well, and also helped me come to the sad realization that my stomach no longer supports my love of strawberries), and was making decent progress.

However, my progress was hindered by Vincent’s–the grocery store across the street–and the fact that they insist on baking delicious cupcakes, cookies, and brownies every day and posting pictures of their magical creations on Facebook. (Not that I actually eat these things every day, but definitely more days than I should, and always on the weekends.)

Exhibits A through C

In an attempt to stop eating so many baked things from Vincent’s, I made my own cupcakes last weekend. They were amazing, but because they were vegan and had tea in the frosting, I convinced myself that they were a perfectly legitimate breakfast item and proceeded to eat one almost every morning…plus another one, or something from Vincent’s, later in the day. *Sigh*

To make a long story short, I very clearly have a dessert problem. But with only 12 days left to race day–and 3 more pounds to lose (which I know doesn’t seem like it would make much of a difference, but being able to take 6 seconds off each mile would actually be kind of awesome)–I feel like I should do something to give myself the best chance possible for finishing this race in a reasonable amount of time.

Soooo, in addition to squeezing in as much easy running as I can over the next 12 days, I will not eat any cupcakes, brownies, cookies, whoopie pies, or any other dessert-y thing. It’s not going to be pretty.

I will most likely out-grumpy Grumpy Cat over the next two weeks.

Wish me luck! And for the love of whatever-higher-power-you-believe-in, somebody better be waiting for me at the finish line with a fucking cupcake.

  1. This is interesting, because a couple years ago I decided to give up all bakery stuff (cookies, muffins, cake, etc, ) for a month. I can’t remember exactly what spurred this but I had a bit of a weakness for cupcakes and cookies and I think i wanted to just challenge myself and see if I could kick the habit. The first 2 weeks were easy, and then it got REALLY hard (there is a photo of me in the supermarket with my arms full of bakery boxes, because I wanted to eat EVERYTHING), and then once I got over the hump it got really easy because I no longer craved that stuff anymore. When my month (or whatever it was) was over I felt no reason to start eating these things again. And that is the story of how i haven’t eaten a cookie in over 2 years. (In all fairness, I should mention that I didn’t quit desserts, I just swapped cookies and cupcakes for chocolate and ice cream. Some may argue these are no better, but I find them to be more satisfying in small quantities than things full of white flour. I guess it’s whatever works for you)

This comment is probably really annoying to you right now, but it’s meant to be encouraging. I think these kinds of food are things we get used to eating and then we crave, but once you get out of the habit of eating them, they lose the allure. So push through! You just have to get over the hump.

  2. LOL I am so sorry!!! I’ll keep my cupcakes to myself next time 😉 Thanks for the link, and good luck resisting Vincent’s. Thankfully I don’t have a bakery nearby…that stuff looks AMAZING! Good luck with your race!!
